How to compare texting prices

A lower plan price is not always a lower bill. Work out what each service would charge for the number of texts you expect to send in a typical month, and check the same points for each one:

  1. What one credit buys. Most services charge one credit for a text of up to 160 characters. Check how many credits a longer text and a picture message use.
  2. Whether you need a plan. Some services sell only monthly or annual plans. Others, including CampaignCNX+, also let you pay for each text with no plan fee.
  3. The phone number. Check whether the number is included or billed each month, and whether a toll-free number costs the same as a local one.
  4. Registration. Local business numbers have to be registered with the carriers through 10DLC. Some services include the fee, and others charge it once.
  5. Carrier fees. Some prices include the carriers' per-message fees, and some add them to the bill.
  6. Unused texts. Check whether texts you do not use roll over, and for how long.
  7. Contracts. Check whether a plan is billed monthly or requires a year's payment in advance.
  8. What is included. Check how many users the plan includes, and whether the reply inbox and keywords cost extra.

Our guide to how much SMS marketing costs walks through each of these with example monthly budgets.
