What happens after the 100 free messages?

Nothing switches off and nothing starts billing on its own. The account is pay-as-you-go, so you top up credits when you want to send more, at $0.06 per SMS with no monthly fee. Move to Basic, Pro, or Enterprise whenever the volume makes a plan cheaper. Your contacts, campaigns, and data are yours either way.

Do I need a credit card to sign up?

No. The trial is free: no card and no payment info up front. You'll only add a payment method when you want to buy more credits, move onto a monthly plan, or add something like DNC lookup or an extra phone line.
